The Performance

The Bharatanatyam Margam Repertoire
01
Pushpanjali
Pushpanjali is derived from the terms Pushpa, meaning flowers , and Anjali, meaning an offering and is the starting piece of a performance. Pushpanjali consists of an offering of flowers to the God. Through pushpanjali, the dancer presents her salutations to the God, the guru, and the audience
02
Natesha Kowthwam
Kowtham contains intricate dance sequences fused with repetitive musical notes. This kowthwam, about Lord Nataraja (Shiva), is combined with the krithi Kandena Natarajana. Together, this dance is about Lord Shiva. The dancer expresses her joy of seeing the compassionate Nataraja and describes how beautiful it is to view Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi together.
03
Shabdam
The Shabdam is the dancer’s first in depth introduction to one of the most integral components of Bharatanatyam - Abhinaya, or mimetic expressions, that are used to convey stories, emotions, and characters
04
Varnam
A Varnam is the centerpiece in a recital of Bharatanatyam dance concert. The verses for this varnam are taken from the Sri Krishna Stotram Shatanamavali. In this piece, the dancer is constantly describing Lord Krishna in numerous ways such as the son of Vasudev and Devaki, who is the husband of Lakshmi Devi, and who stays in the hearts of the Gopas (Cowherders). The piece shows key episodes from Krishna’s life such as lifting the Govardhana Mountain to protect the people of Brindavan from Indra’s rain storm, and the “Kalinga Narthana” where he defeats the snake serpent Kaliya by dancing on its head. It also portrays the tale of Putana, the female demon who attempts to poison the infant Krishna but is ultimately defeated. The varnam also features Krishna’s birth and Vasudeva’s journey to take him to Brindavan, saving him from the evil King Kamsa who intends on killing him. The second half interweaves “Gitopadesha '' where Krishna advises the warrior Arjuna to fight the Kauravas in the battlefield, even though they are his own cousins. When Arjuna is in a dilemma, Krishna tells him the importance of one’s duty and how good always triumphs over evil. Throughout this Varanam, the miracles, feats or leela (mischievous actions) of Lord Krishna are depicted.
05
Javali
Javali is a piece inspired by a love poem. In this Javali, the dancer portrays Vasakasajjika Nayaki who is a heroine that eagerly awaits her beloved. She continuously watches the path, hoping for his arrival, but starts to grow anxious and distressed when he does not return home. She expresses her longing to her Sakhi (her friend) and questions his absence. Throughout the piece, she decorates the bedroom with flower petals and perfume, prepares sandalwood paste, picks flowers to make a garland, and cooks for him in hopes that he will return. In the end, when he still doesn’t show, she finally decides to write a heartfelt love letter. She asks the Sakhi to deliver the message and bring him home.
06
Krithi
This dance is in the eyes of a devotee who is calling out for Lord Rama, asking who else would be there to protect her other than him. She surrenders to his lotus-like feet and wonders why he seems indifferent towards her even though he is worshipped by such great beings like Brahma and Hanuman. The story includes the Sita Swayamvara where all the Kings are gathered and tested to see if they can lift the divine bow that only a righteous person could. When Lord Rama’s turn comes, he lifts the bow effortlessly and wins Princess Sita’s hand in marriage. Another story is presented by the dancer where the elephant Gajendra went to play in the water of a lake where a crocodile resides. When attacked, the elephant surrendered to the Lord through the offering of a lotus flower. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu throws his divine disc, the Sudarshana Chakra, severing the crocodile’s head and saving Gajendra. With these stories, the dancer showcases the times when the Lord came for his devotees. She asks Lord Rama to cleanse her of her sins, hold her hand firmly and never let go.
07
Devi Song
08
Thillana & Mangalam
This dance is followed by Mangalam “Arunachala Shiva” which is a bhajan about Lord Shiva. Through Mangalam, the dancer offers her thanks to the God, the teacher, the accompanying music artists, and the audience.
